| Special
Skills: Specialized
custom electronics and software, precision fabrication |
| Purpose:
To explain the Mayan base-20 counting system. |
| How
it works: The display consists of 5 sets of 4 stainless steel
rods corresponding to the five digits of the Mayan base-20 counting
system. To operate the unit the visitor slides the steel bars or balls
from the left side of the display to the right side. As the pieces
cross the center line of the unit, a computer registers the motion
and adds the assigned value to both the LED displayat the right of
each set of bars and to the totalizer at the bottom of the unit. Moving
the bars or balls from right to left subtracts the corresponding value
from the displays. the display uses specially configured inductive
sensors to detect the presence, absence and direction of the steel
bars and balls. |
